Each year I like to put a benefit mixtape out for a different organization. It’s a chance for me to contribute to my community and work with some exciting artists at the same time. Last year’s mixtape was to benefit Womanly Magazine, which provides accessible health information to women and non-binary people through visual and literary art.

One day last year, while I was still hard at work on the Womanly compilation, I was blasting the Murder City Devils in my headphones. Their classic song “Midnight Service at the Mütter Museum” came on, and I reflected on how neat it is that, after having loved the song for some 15 years, I get to live in the same city as that special museum. I’ve worked with the Devils’ frontman Spencer Moody since 2018 when we put out a poetry collection together, so suddenly the thought crossed my mind:

What if we worked together on a fundraiser for the museum?

I got to work planning. At first I thought the compilation should be Philly-centric, but as I began to widen my scope, an interesting thing happened: Artists from all over the country began telling me about their visits to the museum. “We were on tour,” they’d say, “and had to check out the museum we heard about in that song.” Or “So-and-so told us that if you have an extra day in Philly, you need to get to the Mütter!” It made me realize that the Mütter isn’t just for us in Philly. It belongs to the world. I can’t put it better than Spencer already has in the song: “It’s for the curious, it’s for the hopeful.”

I’m beyond excited to share with you now the culmination of months of planning, writing, and recording. The project is called Midnight Service: A This & That Tapes Benefit for Mütter Museum and it includes a mixtape of music from 11 artists and a zine of writing and art. Many of the songs were written exclusively for the project, and they address the topics of science, health, and medicinal progress. The art zine comes with a digital download of the album and features writing, illustrations, and photography by several talented contributors, including Nancy Hill and Amy Martin of the Mütter Museum. All proceeds from the sales of both the cassette and the zine will go directly to the museum.

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
